    Research Interests

    Rita Noumeir’s main interest in research is to help physicians in their clinical decisions based on the patient’s data and their evolution over time. With the post-graduate students and the researchers that she supervises, Dr Jouvet and her develop artificial intelligence-based methods and systems to 1) detect and quantify the child’s life-threatening distress, 2) implement evidence-based medicine in intensive care units, 3) reduce the risk of readmission to intensive care and 4) optimize patient flow

    Career Summary

    Rita Noumeir holds the double research chair (with Dr Philippe Jouvet) in artificial intelligence in health/ digital health and life sciences of the Fonds de recherche du Québec- Santé (FRQ-S). She is also the co-director of the Artificial Intelligence Cluster for Acute Child Care, funded by the FRQ-S. Since obtaining her PhD in biomedical engineering from Polytechnique Montréal in 1994, she has worked in the field of engineering applied to health and has collaborated with several companies and organizations including Canada Health Infoway, Quebec MSSS and Radiological Society of North America (RSNA). In addition to her work in artificial intelligence applied to clinical decision support systems, she is recognized for her expertise in health interoperability; she is the author of the architecture for sharing medical images in the electronic health record, architecture adopted as standard in Canada and around the world.

    Awards and Distinctions

    Rita Noumeir has been working with Dr Philippe Jouvet since 2015 to develop clinical decision support systems. Their work was crowned with the first-ever Dual Research Chair in Artificial Intelligence in Health / Digital Health and Life Sciences (2021) and the first and only funding for an artificial intelligence and health cluster (2022), from the Fonds de recherche du Québec- Santé (FRQ-S).

    She defined the architecture and infrastructure to exchange medical images between medical imaging systems and the Electronic Health Record (EHR). In particular, she is the author of the Cross-Enterprise Document Sharing for Imaging (XDS-I) interoperability profile, which is adopted as a medical communication and sharing standard in many countries, including Canada. The impact of this achievement is international as it is continuing to shape the deployment of the EHR worldwide.
