Association between Plasma Transfusions and Clinical Outcome in Critically Ill Children: a Prospective Observational Study

Plasma transfusions are commonly used in adults and pediatric intensive care units, mainly to correct coagulopathy in the presence of severe bleeding. Recently, one prospective epidemiological study in adult trauma patients has reported an association between plasma transfusions and unfavorable clinical outcome in critically ill patients. This gives rise to major concerns. To date, no pediatric prospective pediatric study has addressed this issue.

Main Objectives

Prospectively analyze the association between plasma transfusions and clinical outcome of patients in pediatric critical care setting.

Preliminary results

Plasma transfusions would be independently associated with an increased occurrence of multiple organ dysfunction syndrome, nosocomial infections and a prolonged PICU length of stay.
