Clinical Research Unit on Children's Psychosocial Maladjustment

Unit Presentation

The Clinical Research Unit on Children's Psychosocial Maladjustment is an interdisciplinary group of researchers who are helping to understand the development of social adjustment problems in children and adolescents and to identify the most effective means of preventing such development. The Unit is part of the Research Unit on Children's Psychosocial Maladjustment (GRIP).

The research program is part of an overall body of research that is being conducted on human development by investigators in fields as diverse as anthropology, biology, criminology, demography, economy, education, genetics, neurosciences, nutrition, pediatrics, psychiatry, psychology and sociology. They integrate these various interdisciplinary perspectives through the use of an integrated conceptual model within the context of longitudinal-experimental studies that serve as collaboration vectors.

GRIP researchers have been working closely with families, school staff and school boards since their very first longitudinal-experimental studies.

The research program focuses on three complementary research axes:

  • The first revolves around work that describes and predicts social maladjustment problems in children. The main objective of the axis is to describe the prevalence of adjustment issues in a given territory, describe their development and identify pertinent risk factors and protection factors.
  • The second addresses family and environmental factors including peers and the school setting.
  • The third centers on experimental interventions aimed at preventing adjustment problems in the young.
