Career Summary
Dr Lapointe is a paediatrician specialized in immunology and has been working at the CHU Sainte-Justine since 1971. He is head of the service of immunology-allergy-rheumatology and currently director of the mother and child HIV/aids hospital unit integrating patient care, teaching and research. He is professor of paediatrics at the University of Montreal. From 1999 to 2002, he was director of education at the CHU Sainte-Justine.
Since the beginning of the AIDS epidemic, he has been involved as a clinician and investigator for HIV-infected women and children. In 1997, he received the Louis-Pasteur Award for excellence in the fight against AIDS. He works at the local, national and international levels. He made major contributions to knowledge related to HIV infection among women and children. His research covers clinical immunology as well as various aspects of mother and child HIV transmission. Psychosocial aspects of HIV infection and economic aspects of different intervention models have also been explored. At the international level, he is participates in the development of ambulatory health care units in Haiti and Mali. He is the General Secretary for America of OPALS (Organisation panafricaine de lutte contre le sida).
