Post-Transfusion Survival in the Province of Québec: a Pilot Project

This study aims to quantify the survival and survival years in adult or pediatric patients who have received a transfusion in Quebec. Such data are indispensable to later conduct cost-benefit and economic studies.

Such information could have an important impact on transfusion policies in Quebec. To conduct this study, data contained in the MedEcho, RAMQ, Traceline and Institut de la Statistique du Québec (deaths) databases need to be matched. This feasibility study will serve as a basis for larger scale studies.

Main Objectives

Determine post-transfusion survival in two distinct populations:

  1. adults who have received a first transfusion between 1996 and 2006; post-transfusion survival will be evaluated at years 1, 2, 5 and 10.
  2. children who have received a first transfusion between 2005 and 2006; post-transfusion survival at years 1 and 2.

Determine the demographic and clinical factors associated with death in patients receiving a first transfusion.
