Epidemiology of Transfusion in Quebec: A Pilot Project

Knowledge of blood component usage is an important element in determining future needs for blood components. In Quebec, there is no data on the epidemiology of transfusion. It is essential to study the use of blood products in order to better predict future transfusion needs and better determine the possible impact of the occurence of a new blood transmissible pathogen in the population. Improving our knowledge into Quebec’s transfused population will also enable us to estimate the number of recipients who may have contracted an infection transmitted by transfusion or who could potentialy be infected in case of the emergence of a new pathogen transmissible by transfusion. This feasibility study will serve as a model for larger scale studies.

Main Objectives

  • Evaluate the possibility of identifying the recipients of blood products in all Quebec hospitals;
  • Extract the demographic data of recipients and data on blood products received; Describe the population transfused in hospitals.

Preliminary results

Analysis of results is in progress.
