Epidemiology, Determinants and Clinical Impact of Transfusion of Red Blood Cells, Fresh Frozen Plasma and Platelet Concentrates in Critically Ill Children: A One-Year Prospective study TGRPP

Main Objectives

Compare the practice of pediatric intensivists at CHU Sainte-Justine observed in 2000 to practices observed in a cohort in 2009, 2 years after the TRIPICU study. We expect to find a significant decrease in the proportion of patients who received a RBC transfusion during their stay in the CHU Sainte-Justine PICU.

We also expect to find that the data from the TRIPICU study are reasonably well applied to medical cases and general surgery cases, but poorly applied to cardiac surgery cases (by “poorly applied” we mean that a transfusion of red blood cells is given to stable patients only when hemoglobin concentrations are lower than 70 g/L or more in 90% of the cases).

This prospective cohort study of 972 patients will enable us to study the determinants of transfusions of red blood cells and to characterize the determinants of plasma and platelet transfusions in critically ill children. Several projects have resulted from this big project:

  • TGRPP Multiple Organ Dysfunction Syndrome (MODS) in critially ill children: value of 2 sets of diagnostic criteria.
  • Determinants of red blood cell transfusion in Pediatric Intensive Care: a one year prospective study.
  • Red Blood Cell (RBC) Transfusion-Associated Respiratory Complications (TARC) in critically ill children: a one-year prospective epidemiological study
  • Red blood cell (RBC) transfusion-associated respiratory dysfunction (TARD) in critically ill children: a sub-study of the TRIPICU trial
  • Étude de sous-groupe « Epidemiology of determinants: Fresh Frozen Plasma
  • Cohort study on observed practices in red blood cell transfusions in pediatric intensive care.
  • Determinants of platelets transfusion in Pediatric Intensive Care Units.
  • Principal Investigator of the Study: Dr Jacques Lacroix
  • Investigator at CHU Sainte-Justine: Dr Jacques Lacroix
  • Source of funding: Fonds de Recherche du Québec – Santé (FRQS)
  • Study Design: Étude épidémiologique prospective
  • Number of Participants: 972
