QLSCD - Quebec Longitudinal Study of Child Development in Quebec - Health

This ancillary study is part of the basic QLSCD study, a representative cohort of single births in Quebec recruited in 1998, and it has maintained a high participation rate. Data concerning the perinatal conditions and characteristics of the children have been documented annually starting at 5 months. Data from the basic study were taken from hospital birth records in addition to interviews and other annual questionnaires filled out by respondents. For the health section, the team added biological and anthropomorphic measures to the usual data. This section of the QLSCD study will allow the team of researchers to look at chronic experiences of poverty and adversity prior to age 5 in relation to health problems at age 10, including cardiovascular risk factors. The team specifically wishes to examine the role of stress in this relationship. The study will enhance current understanding of the link between poverty and child health and help to explain mechanisms that lead to health-related social inequality.
