Evaluation of Surgical Scoliosis Correction of the Outer Trunk

The team’s research objective is to design a computerized model of the human trunk to simulate the effect of a spinal surgery. This multilayered deconstructable model of the trunk will be based on data from X rays (routinely taken as part of the scoliosis diagnosis) in addition to noninvasive sources (MRI, surface topography). It will also include biomedical engineering techniques and 3D computer graphics. Taking the clinician’s estimation of the predicted spine correction degree (expressed in terms of standard X ray markers), the model will apply this correction to the surface layer in order to visualize the outer geometry of the trunk. The clinician will also be able to measure markers related to residual asymmetry and gibbosity of the trunk and thereby assess the quality of the therapeutic result.
