Determinants of Oral Corticosteroid Responsiveness In Wheezing Asthmatic Youth (DOORWAY)

Oral corticosteroids are the cornerstone of the treatment of a moderate to severe asthma attack at the emergency department. The purpose of this study is to identify if certain factors reduce the response to oral steroids and increase the risk of hospitalization. The studied factors are the age of the child, the sex, triggering factors (such as viral infections) and exposure to tobacco smoke. We believe that a decrease in the response to treatment may be modulated by the nature of the inflammation in the airways during the asthma flare-up and the genetic make-up of the child.
