Research Enhancement and Entrepreneurship at Sainte-Justine

Montreal, July 28, 2009 - On July 7 an agreement was made for the most significant investment in biotechnology in Canada since 2007 and in Quebec since 2004: $17 million in funding for Allostera Pharma, a spin-off company based on the research findings of Dr. Sylvain Chemtob, a neonatalogist and researcher at Sainte-Justine University Hospital Research Center and those of his research associate, Christiane Quiniou.

The funding is earmarked for the development of a new class of drugs with exceptional properties including the ability to optimize the mode of action of drugs.

Allostera Pharma uses a technology platform that makes it possible to develop modulators within a very short period of time that target specific receptors and improve the efficacy and safety of the treatment of autoimmune diseases such as psoriatic arthritis, Crohn’s disease, rheumatoid arthritis and more than 60 other related disorders.

The operation, which is the result of many years’ work, represents an exceptional accomplishment and is an excellent example of knowledge transfer by applying research from the laboratory bench to the patient’s bedside.
