Afcas awards Carl-Éric Aubin for bridging the gap between mechanical engineering and health sciences
MONTRÉAL, November 3, 2015 – Carl-Éric Aubin, head of the Musculoskeletal Diseases and Rehabilitation research axis and researcher at CHU Sainte-Justine Research Center, and professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Polytechnique Montréal, was awarded the Fonds de recherche du Quebec – Santé (FRQS)-sponsored Jacques-Rousseau award for Multidisciplinary by the Association francophone pour le savoir (ACFAS). The award recognizes his outstanding scientific achievements, whereby he has pushed the boundaries of mechanical engineering and innovatively bridged the gap with the health sciences. This honor was paid to him during the ACFAS gala held on October 22 at the Caisse de dépôt et placement du Québec.
(in French only)
Aubin's scientific interests include biomechanical modeling, surgical engineering, biomechanics of orthopedic treatment (braces and spinal instrumentation), computer-assisted surgery, and design of mechanical systems and medical devices. His work aims to evaluate, design and optimize orthopedic treatment and surgery simulation tools to make treatments more efficient and less invasive. As holder of the NSERC/Medtronic Research Chair in Spine Biomechanics, he develops, together with his research team, simulation tools that improve the treatment of scoliosis and novel fusionless spinal devices. He also is designing a navigation/simulation system, which is to assist surgeons in optimizing surgeries.
In addition, Carl-Éric Aubin holds a Canada Research Chair in Orthopedic Engineering. He also is an adjunct professor in the Department of Surgery at the Faculty of Medicine of Université de Montréal. He acts associate director - Infrastructure at the CHU Sainte-Justine Research Center and as co-director of the Biomedical Science and Technology Research Group.
