The International Cancer Genome Consortium (ICGC) data portal

Dr. Vincent Ferretti and his team made an important contribution to facilitate big data analysis, which appeared on March 15th in the journal Nature Biotechnology. The publication presents the International Cancer Genome Consortium (ICGC) data portal hosted at dcc.icgc.org which contains data from 84 cancer projects collectively representing over 24,000 donors with molecular data and approximately 77 million somatic mutations.

Despite the large size of the data set, complex queries that span the entire data set complete in well under 1s. To achieve this level of scalability, Ferretti’s team employed for the first time in the genomic data portal field, a host of innovative and modern “Big Data” technologies. These technologies allow to cross reference and index data at the project, data type, gene, and variant level, and enable a fast, powerful, and informative interface that accelerates new research insights and discoveries. The paper present the ICGC Data Portal and describe both the functionality and underlying ‘Big Data’ technologies that make it unique. Dr. Ferretti used similar approaches to develop the NCI Genomic Data Commons and the NIH Kids First Data portals. At the CHU Ste-Justine, he and his team will build further on this strategy to create portals for two large scale genomics projects, namely The Centre québécois de génomique clinique and the Centre québécois de données génomiques.
