This year the Sainte-Justine University Hospital Research Center, with the support of the Sainte-Justine UHC Foundation, is launching the 2nd Sainte-Justine UHC Foundation Postdoctoral Scholarships for Excellence competition. The competition is intended for the world’s postdoctoral elite in evaluative, clinical and fundamental biomedical research. Three CAD$150,000 scholarships over three years will be awarded. Each one comes with CAD$15,000 seed funding in the first year provided by the Sainte-Justine University Hospital Research Center. The determinant selection criteria are the excellence of the file and the applicant’s official mentorship under one of the Center’s “active researchers.”
The Sainte-Justine UHC Foundation Postdoctoral Scholarships for Excellence are a veritable springboard for the careers of the world’s future leaders in mother-child biomedical research. They enable future postdoctoral students to carve out a niche for themselves in the 1st mother-child center in Canada and 4th in America, along with investigators who enjoy international acclaim in the university hospital research center’s six areas of priority research:
Deadline for submission of applications
March 31, 2012
Eligibility
Canadian and international applicants
The competition is open to all Canadian citizens and non-Canadians who have pursued training in an appropriate scientific discipline and obtained their doctorate (PhD) after December 31, 2010. Nevertheless, applicants who have completed their doctorate at the same institution of learning as the active researcher’s home institution that is supporting their application in the competition are not eligible. A functional understanding of English or French is required.
Applicants with medical degrees
Medical degree holders who apply must also hold a PhD or an MSc in addition to their MD.
Existing postdoctoral students of the Sainte-Justine University Hospital Research Center
All postdoctoral students of the Center are eligible to the competition provided that their arrival at the Center dates back after January 1, 2012. If a postdoctoral student works under the supervision of a senior researcher, this researcher shall commit by writing that he will recruit an additional postdoctoral student, in the event the candidate wins one of the Postdoctoral Scholarships for Excellence.
Official mentorship with an “active researcher” at the Sainte-Justine University Hospital Research Center
To be eligible for the competition, applicants must be officially mentored with one of the Sainte-Justine University Hospital Research Center’s “active researchers.” That is to say that they must have obtained the endorsement of one of these researchers before submitting their application.
Award recipients who have entered into a mentorship agreement in this way will be called upon to work as a member of their researcher’s team and the researcher will become their postdoctoral fellowship supervisor. To learn more about the investigators and their research areas, themes and interests or to contact them to ask for their backing, please consult the “Our Researchers” page on the Center’s website.
Before contacting a researcher
Please contact us to make sure the researcher is considered as an "active researcher".
Admission to graduate school
Once a finalist has been designated as an award recipient in the competition, it is incumbent upon the Sainte-Justine University Hospital Research Center’s responsibility to file an application to have the recipient admitted into a postdoctoral program in the graduate school with which the active researcher who supported the award recipient’s application is affiliated. Ultimately, the awarding of a postdoctoral scholarship for excellence is conditional upon the winner’s final admission in accordance with the specific admission criteria of the institution in question.
Deadline and dates for unveiling the results
All applications must be postmarked and received by March 31, 2012, at the latest. Applicants will be advised of the results in April 2012. Finalists will be invited to come and present their work to the scientific community at the Sainte-Justine University Hospital on June 7, 2012.
Travel and accommodation fees will be paid by the Center and its partners. The names of the award recipients will be revealed at the end of June 2012.
