Institutional Mother-Child Biobank

The Institutional Mother-Child Biobank's mandate is to support teams in their research efforts to develop new diagnostic and prevention strategies for the benefit of children with rare diseases.

Also, a section for pediatric cancers, which has existed for more than twenty-five years and whose expertise at CHU Sainte-Justine is recognized worldwide, has been integrated into the biobank.


  • Storage capacity of > 1 million samples at low temperature (-80°C)
  • > 70,000 samples at -190°C


  • Biomek i7 robotic station
  • 18 ultra-low temperature freezers including 4 with liquid nitrogen backup system
  • 4 cryogenic storage systems (Cryoplus 3)
  • Laboratory space of 290 m2 located in seismic block 9


  • DNA and RNA extractions
  • Preparation of PBMC
  • Preparation of plasma and serum
  • Aliquoting and storage of biospecimens (blood, saliva, urine, breast milk, tissue, other)
  • Coming soon: cell culture, qPCR
