Research Center's Annual Retreat

Montreal, April 23, 2010 – The CHU Sainte-Justine Research Center’s retreat is one of the high points of the year for the scientific community. This past April 21 and 22, about 200 researchers, students, hospital administrators, representatives from the University of Montreal and a number of noted guests took part in these two days of meetings and presentations with a great show of enthusiasm.

The first day allowed the new investigators in each research axis to present their work and research interests. Numerous presentations were made within the context of a symposium that focused on genetics and genomics. A report on the clinical research retreat was also presented. Just before, the President and Executive Director of the Sainte-Justine UHC Foundation, Anièle Lecoq, pointed out that by devoting almost 50% of its annual donations to research development, the Foundation had placed scientific activity at the very heart of its priorities, which are closely aligned with the Mother-Child UHC’s mission.

During the second day, each of the six research axes presented its highlights and development perspectives, which had been previously set during the respective retreats of the individual axes. These reflections will prove to be very valuable when it comes time to carry out the strategic planning that has already begun at the CHU Sainte-Justine, particularly within the framework of submitting the 2011-2015 development plan for the new center at the FRSQ. We can already see the major directions that will guide the research teams over the next five years and allow us to consolidate the Center’s leadership in the field of mother-child health both here and abroad.

The message given by the newly appointed Rector of the University of Montreal, Dr Guy Bretion and the Associate Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, Dr Pierre Boyle, is one of genuine commitment and support when it comes to realizing the Research Center’s projects. “For us, the CHU Sainte-Justine Research Center is a key player in our large network. Sainte-Justine is a center with an international reputation. It is an exceptional educational environment and along with the CHUM it conducts backbone training for the University’s integrated health network. This is why the Research Center can rely on the active collaboration of the University to plan structuring projects and consolidate high caliber scientific research,” stated Dr Boyle.

For this vital partnership, targeted recruitment, clinical research development, networking, knowledge transfer and research leveraging all constitute strategic elements for research development.

According to the Director of the Research Center, Dr Guy Rouleau, “This kind of retreat provides new researchers with an ideal forum; it improves dialogue among the research teams and thereby leads to new collaborative efforts. This retreat will have been a true success.”
