    Research Interests

Development of French language in Québec

My projects relate to the establishment of standards for language development in French-speaking preschool-aged children of Québec. Studies to better describe the characteristics of Québec French during the learning process (since 2002), as well as studies to develop and standardize language assessment tools for young children (since 2003) are in progress. These efforts should make it possible to refine the clinical tools available to the professionals working with young children and therefore facilitate early and effective identification of children at risk of presenting language disorders.

    Augmentative communication and language development

Another part of my research program relates to the impact that a graphic modality rather than a spoken one (non-oral communication or augmentative and alternative communication) could have on language development. Studies relating to the construction and interpretation of graphic symbol sequences by participants of varied ages, with and without severe communication disorders, are in progress since 2002. This work should make it possible to better understand how the choice of an alternative communication system can influence language development and how to adjust the intervention for children with severe communication disorders to optimize their linguistic potential.
